Lohmann: First Frost Of The Season Later Than Average
The first frost of the 2020 growing season is behind scheduled, a fact about which many won’t complain. Marilyn Lohmann with the National Weather Service said in a typical year, areas such as Yakima and Pullman would have already recorded overnight lows below 32 degrees. For the Tri-Cities, Walla Walla, NE Oregon, temperatures below freezing typically occur mid-month, around October 15th. And for Wenatchee area, we’ll see the first freeze of the season around October 25th.
“And usually by the end of October, is when we’ve seen those temperatures down below 28 degrees with widespread frost and more of a killing frost," Lohmann noted. "So, this year has kind of been a bonus temperature wise with cool nights and the very warm days.”
At this point, it doesn’t look like we’ll see overnight temperatures dip consistently into the 30s until Wednesday, and that will be reserved primarily for the Palouse. Lohmann noted, making the delayed frost even more peculiar is the fact that the Northwest say very cold overnight temperatures, dropping into the upper 30s in early September.
