Link Between Bovine Diseases and Human Diseases Possibly Found
Researchers at Washington State University recently published a report where they link microorganisms that can Johne’s Disease in cows and Crohn’s Disease in humans.
Dr. William Davis said that they partnered with researchers in India and were able to verify that a specific microorganism known as MAP was found in sick people and cows but not in healthy which could be a major step forward in fighting Crohn’s Disease or other similar diseases.
“The medical community really has to look in greater detail so that we can sort this out and devise the best therapies for patients with Crohn’s Disease.”
Estimates show that up to 1.4 million people in the U.S. suffer from Crohn’s Disease.
For the ranchers, Davis said they are working to understand the immune system and response when it comes to this microorganism.
“Ultimately it’s saying that there’s a need for an effective vaccine that will remove the pathogen from the environment.”
Davis said these kinds of diseases are similar to tuberculosis and that this discovery that a specific bacteria could one of the major causes will hopefully help in creating better treatments.
