Newhouse: “I Understand The Pressures Farmers Are Facing”
Between the government shutdown, trade wars, and inflation, the farming community is under a lot of pressure. And that’s well before talking about the success or struggles of the growing season.
Central Washington Representative Dan Newhouse said while farmers are inherently a resilient bunch, so many challenges at once is difficult for anyone to overcome.
“I'm a farmer too, as you know, and we're facing the exact same things at home on my farm with my son and his wife," he said. "They are trying to keep things together and it's very difficult. The high cost of literally everything and the prices we're receiving for the products we produce are just not keeping up.”
Many In The Ag Community Are Concerned
As one of the few farmers in Congress, and as a member of the House Ag Committee, Newhouse says he feels a strong responsibility to share the story of farm country.
“A lot of people are very concerned about what's around the corner. And I carry that with me back here to Washington D.C. to make sure my colleagues understand the dire nature that agriculture is facing, the situation they're facing right now," Newhouse said. "And the things that we do here absolutely have an impact on producers, not just in central Washington, but around the country.”
Newhouse added he’s hopeful that the region will see a lot of snow and rain this winter to help offset the dry conditions reported throughout 2025.
