Hort Show Gets Underway Monday in Yakima
The 114th Annual Washington state Tree Fruit Association and Northwest Hort Expo gets underway Monday at the Yakima Convention Center. The Hort show, as many know it, brings in research experts from across the Northwest and Nation. The WSTFA’s Jon DeVaney said this year’s line up includes discussions about trade, emerging markets, Global Economic trends and spotting possible boom and bust cycles. He noted the economic angle fits well with the Show’s theme, “Managing What you Can Control, and Planning For What You Can’t”.
“We’re trying to give useful actionable information to the industry on actions they can take now, to reduce their risks of pests, diseases, economic uncertainty, and making them aware of things that maybe coming they can’t affect but they can prepare for.”
DeVaney noted they will have classes and seminars on staving off Fire Blight, and managing for returns.
“Growers want to make sure that as much of their fruit is packable as possible. So, we also have a half day session looking at how you manage post harvest decay and disease issues, both in the warehouse and what you can do in the orchard to ensure that the fruit will be in good quality and come out of storage in good condition to be packed.”
