USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said as conversations get underway for the new farm bill, he hopes to see the new legislation tackle the issue of an aging farmer population.

Vilsack noted that one way to find the next generation of farmers could be to offer a G.I. Bill for farmland access.

“Following World War II it created this opportunity for most returning veterans to have home ownership. We need to be thinking about that in the ag space and that’s what a farm bill could potentially do.”

Another program is the Young Farmers and Ranchers program that has been helpful in finding new ag producers.
