The Washington State FFA Convention is Thursday through Saturday in Pullman.  Thousands of blue jacket from across the Evergreen State will travel to the Palouse, not only to learn more about agriculture, and elect officers for next year, but also have fun in the process.  Abbie DeMeerleer, Executive Director of Washington State FFA said as with any event, giving back to the community will be a big part of the weekend.  She says that includes busing younger students from nearby school districts to WSU’s campus, and teaching them for up to three hours about agriculture and how it impacts their lives.

“Because there is that gap about where our food comes from, and we want Washingtonians to understand Washington Ag.  So our FFA members put together ten minute interactive workshop for the students.”

In addition to all of the prep works by those FFA students, DeMeerleer added organizations such as  the Washington state Potato Commission, Dairy Farmers of Washington, Washington Farm Bureau and Ag in the Classroom all help with the educational effort, by providing materials and giveaways.  DeMeerleer told the Washington Ag Network while this week’s convention brings the 2016-17 year to a close, FFA will soon be back to work.

“It is the beginning for those six new state officers that will be elected on Saturday evening, and they then get 365 days to serve the organization.”
