As farmers continue to get older with many leaving the industry through retirement, making smart decisions on transitioning farmland to another owner is critical.

John Larson of American Farmland Trust said a huge part of that will be educating current and future farmers on how to transition, and making sure the message is consistent.

“National Farmers Union has a good transition, next generation type of a program. Just making sure that we have that collaborative thought process of taking a look at your program and relationship to what we’re working on, how do we make sure that there’s consistency of thought.”

Despite the need for some uniformity, Larson also stressed the importance that each transition is different and the education of it needs to have some flexibility.
