Farmers Market Week Begins Sunday

Farmers Market Week begins Sunday, August 6^th highlighting the value of farmers markets to their community and to the farmers.

Washington State Department of Agriculture Public Information Officer Mike Louisell said farmers markets offer a gathering place to meet new people while offering farmers direct sales opportunities.

“It’s a good chance to get fresh, nutritious foods. For families that are on assistance from a government program, they offer access to fresh produce since many markets do accept federal nutrition assistance benefits.”

There are more than 160 farmers markets in Washington State totaling more than $47 million in sales.

Louisell said the WSDA tries to help farmers markets by working with beginning farmers who might use the markets to sell, teaching good agricultural practices and through promotion.

“It gives attention to a segment where you can buy your food that some people might have gone to over the years. Maybe get back in the swing of things and get back out there and see what’s happening in your community.”

Louisell said this is the perfect time for Farmers Market week because the food at the markets are so good and plus it’s good to get out and about and support your local economy.
