April 22nd, or Earth Day, is a day where we are supposed to consider ways in which we can help preserve the planet and keep it healthy.

Executive Director of Washington Friends of Farms and Forests Heather Hansen says that’s every day for farmers.

“Farmers are the best environmentalists out there. They live on that land, they see it morning, noon and night year after year. In many cases, their parents and grandparents grew up there and they hope their children and grandchildren will grow up there.”

Hansen says farmers are always looking for better ways to keep their land healthy including lessening tillage practices, finding new varieties that can reduce chemicals and much more.

The message on Earth Day according to Hansen, appreciation.

“We have a huge abundance of food here and it’s very reasonably priced and we should support our farmers that make that possible.”

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and is celebrated in nearly 200 countries each year.
