Duvall: Numbers On Ballance Sheets Headed In The Wrong Direction
USDA's most recent farm income forecast has created sour tones across farm country. American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall said for the U.S. farmer to stay in business, they need certainty.
“USDA’s most recent net farm income forecast confirms what we already knew, the numbers on our balance sheets are heading in the wrong direction," Duvall said. "Net farm income will decline to $158.4 billion in 2026. That’s $4.3 billion lower than 2025. Among the driving factors are cost increases in fertilizer, fuel, transportation and property taxes."
Duvall noted market assistance has provided some lifeline to farmers, but long-term solutions are needed.
"Passing a new, modernized farm bill will give farmers the tools they need to navigate today’s economic challenges," Duvall added. "Delivering economic assistance, strengthening trade and lowering production costs will help ensure farmers can remain resilient."
