Consumer interest in organic products continues to grow. Industry analyst Ryan Koory of Mercaris said the latest information is based on 2020, the latest full year data.

“Organic food sales reach $20-billion, which is a record setting level.”

Koory said shifts in consumer demands drover the rise in organic sales.

“Which we saw more consumer expenditures within the grocery store space where organics has a stronger footprint.  And with that you see the overall share of organic foods within total consumer expenditures on food actually increased pretty substancially.  From about 2.9% to  =almost 3.5%.”

And regarding growth in organic sales by category, “Thought 2020 pretty much every category, with the exception of snack foods,  grew by at least 10%, with the overall category growing by 13%," Koory noted.

Likewise, organic acreage is growing to meet consumer demand. With an estimated 3.6 million harvested acres in 2021; up 7% from a year earlier.
