Dairy Leaders Applaud Expanding School Options

The International Dairy Foods Association and National Milk Producers Federation praised Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue and the USDA who put forth a rule that will allow low-fat, flavored milk back into schools.

In 2012, the USDA eliminated the low-fat, flavored milk options for schools which resulted in a dramatic decrease in milk consumption in schools.

The publication of the interim final rule will allow school districts to solicit bids for low-fat flavored milk next spring before the 2018-19 school year begins.

President and CEO of the NMPF Jim Mulhern said this will increase consumption and that, “The math here is quite simple: More milk consumption equals better nutrition for America’s kids.”
