The dairy industry is supporting legislation currently in the U.S. Senate that they say would enforce existing laws regarding what can be called milk, and what can’t.

Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation said, “The reason why this is important is that it really establishes that in order to meet the government’s established standard for milk, it has to not only come from an animal, but it really has to have a consistent level of nutrition. The imitators just don’t have that level of nutrition.”

The bill was sponsored by Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin.

Galen said it’s important to dairy producers that this bill gets passed.

“I think what really irritates farmers is not so much that it’s competition but it’s competition that is playing fast and loose with the labeling laws and it is inferior competition from a nutritional standpoint.”

The bill is currently in Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
