Now though Tuesday, the Dairy Farmers of Washington are partnering with Yoke’s Fresh Market Stores to Give-a-Gallon.  The two are working with 2nd Harvest to get dairy products to children and families in need across the Columbia Basin.  Jeff Steele with the Dairy Farmers of Washington told the Washington Ag Network this is the 3rd year they’ve partnered with Yoke’s.

“Milk is an item that’s rarely donated, but it’s in high demand, so the Dairy Farmers of Washington have done everything they can to try to create the awareness and get products in to the Food Bank channel for folks that are struggling right now.”

Steel said Milk is a good source of protein, and is relatively in expensive when compared to the cost of animal protein.

“It contains a lot of vitamins and minerals that are really important, calcium is the one that most people are familiar with, but it also has phosphorus like bananas, it has lot of other nutrients that are just beneficial, it’s sort of like a perfect food.”

Steele said the Dairy Farmers of Washington believes in giving back to the communities in when they live and work.

To participate, customers will find donations scan cards in the dairy section or near the cash register at their local Yoke’s stores.  2nd Harvest officials say with school wrapping up, it’s vital donations are made to local food banks, to help children that won’t have free, nutritious meals during the summer months.
