Contact If you're planning any kind of construction work on your property, from a storage shed to an outbuilding, the FSA is reminding you to contact them before you move one shovel load of dirt.  Brian Dansel, the Executive Director of the Washington state FSA, says farmers must remember they are responsible for Project planning as well as Environmental Reviews.  He said while paperwork can seem overwhelming, your local FSA office has the information and resources to make the process as smooth as possible.

"Early and often, go and talk with our representatives at the Farm Service Agency at your local USDA Service Center, but then more importantly don't be afraid of the process because it really isn't as time consuming and onerous as one might think. It actually goes pretty smooth for the most part."

Dansel said farmers typically don't like to ask questions, or ask for help.  He said those at the local FSA office don't consider requests an imposition.

"The people love to work with producers, that's why they're working for the Farm Service Agency because they've got a heart for agriculture, and they want to help these producers, be able to make a go of it.”
