Consumers Reminded To Watch For Scammers This Holiday Season
With Thanksgiving behind us, many are checking their Christmas list and planning on making purchases. But because of the pandemic a business closures, many of us will make those holiday purchases on-line. Sean Voskuhl with the AARP said whether you’re new to on-line shopping or an old pro, it’s important to watch out for scammers this time of year. He noted it starts with checking and rechecking website addresses.
“Scammers are targeting online shoppers with fake websites that look like they are from legitimate retailers-like Amazon or Target. Fraudsters make small changes to the spelling of the names in the URL, so be vigilant when shopping online. And, once your packages are delivered don’t leave them on your porch unattended-porch pirates are lurking nearby for the opportunity to snatch them.”
Voskuhl also warns of Charity scams this time of year, where an unsolicited request for funds is made, but does not go to help the intended audience. Not only should you be concerned about protecting your pocketbook, but also your personal identity. Be very cautious where you enter personal information.
And, Voskuhl reminds everyone if a situation seems too good to be true, it most likely is. For additional tips or scams you need to watch for this time of year, check out AARP's Website.
