After a warm start to February, things have cooled off considerably across the Inland Northwest.  Marilyn Lohmann with the National Weather Service says the high pressure that kept the area dry and warm over the past couple of weeks, broke down and moved off to the east.  That allowed cooler arctic temperatures to move in.  She said with the warm start to the month, and now this cool weather, February could end up an average month.

“Even though the last couple of days have been extremely cold, we still had a couple of days late last week, in fact on Saturday the highs were in the 60s again, even though it didn’t feel like that with those really strong winds.”

Lohmann says the long-term forecast is calling for below normal temperatures and near normal precipitation not only for the next week, but into early March.

“We’ve finally gotten to that point where we’re seeing that cooler La Nina type weather.  The La Nina is actually kind of peaking and it’s expected to become neutral but these affects are little bit delayed this year.”
