The U.S. Commerce Department has announced further steps have been made to re-open the Chinese market to U.S. beef producers, something that was agreed to in meetings between President Trump and President Xi.

Kent Bacus of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is excited about the future.

“For the U.S. beef industry, we’re one of the major exporters of the world that does not have access to the Chinese market. We are optimistic as, of all the issues of this recent meeting between President Xi and President Trump, U.S. beef access was the top priority that was listed.”

One more technical consultation needs to happen to make sure U.S. beef is back in China by the mid-July deadline agreed to by both countries.

Secretary Sonny Perdue said this will likely open some floodgates.

“I’m convinced that if the Chinese start eating U.S. beef, they’re going to want more of it. [They have] a growing middle class that wants protein and we can give them high-quality beef.”
