Ranchers and others interested in attending a beef herd economic workshop in Moses Lake have until the end of the day Friday, December 30th to register.

WSU’s Sarah Smith said they’re focus is on creating economic sustainability.

“We definitely want to provide this opportunity for producers to go ahead and look at as these prices change, what best fits their model.”

The workshop will go through various computer programs designed at the University of Wyoming that can help producers strategize and examine various scenarios to make decisions.

Smith said these tools are critical for each rancher.

“The decision you make today not only affects the calf when it’s born nine months later but it impacts the feedlot when the butcher that animal at 16-18 months and if you bring that heifer back into your herd it impacts you for the next 2-3 years.”

Smith says with such drastic drops in prices, the plans ranchers made two years ago probably don’t work anymore.

Register at WSU's Grant County Extension website.
