Almonds Can Help Gut Health & More, OSU Researchers Say
A new study from Oregon State University shows Almonds may be an even bigger superfood than previously thought. According to the study, just two-ounces of almonds a day - that’s about 45 nuts - improved cardiometabolic and gut health.
"Just taking a handful of almonds everyday for three months helped with limiting gut inflammation, especially in the people that have problems with gut inflammation, said professor of Nutrition and Director of the Linus Pauling Institute Emily Ho. She added the nuts also improved levels of Vitamin E and lowered cholesterol, without additional weight gain.
We Need To Look At Diet Holistically
But, Ho pointed out almonds aren’t a "miracle cure" for the estimated 40% of adults with metabolic syndrome.
"The biggest thing with your gut health though, is variety. In our case, just adding almonds did help," Ho said. "But you need to think about your diet holistically; fruits and vegetables, whole grains, all those other good things are all pieces of the puzzles, as well."
Ho is now recruiting participants for another 'nutty study', on the impact of walnuts on age-related memory and cognition.
