A USDA-funded research study on ag freight corridors, their modal capabilities and pricing started in September.

University of Tennesse’s Mark Burton is one of the researchers and said their focus will be on the Northwest, Great Plains and the Mississippi River Basin.

“These three corridors are all very much related in terms of the economics and the pricing of the transportation resources that are used and that’s what we want to do here. Actually identify those linkages and try to figure how to best use the infrastructure that’s there and perhaps point to potential needs.”

The study’s focus is on rail and water traffic and competition using computer modeling for a look at the infrastructure.
