Ag Economy Barometer Shows Rebound in Farmer Belief

The Ag Economy Barometer for September showed an increase in farmer confidence.

Director of the Purdue Center for Commercial Agriculture Jim Mintert said it tied to optimism about the future.

“The index of future expectations which is based on several of the questions in the barometer survey improved from a 102 back in August to 109. That was one of the big drivers in the improvement.”

Many farmers though have priced or sold less than a typical season this year, caused in part by high yields in many crops, but Mintert said that’s not the only reason.

“People are reluctant to sell at these recent price levels. There is some optimism about where prices are going over the course of the winter, perhaps into the spring an expectation that we will some stronger prices and some positive storage return.”
