Do you want an easy way to start an argument? Just mention GMO and go from there. Some consumers strongly object to food with GMO ingredients even though, "There's been no evidence that any of these food products have caused any kind of food safety issues," said Kansas State University Extension Food Safety Specialist, Karen Blakeslee.

She added GMO foods have been around and safe, since 1994. But, despite that, she notes there's a lot of misinformation about these foods and why they are in our food system. Blakeslee said GMO crops benefits consumers, and the entire world in a variety of ways. She noted GMOs need fewer chemical applications, are more resistance to weather extremes, and can be made more nutritious. But she says these points often get lost during social media conversations.

In response, the FDA is "trying to get that science-based information out there."

To do that, the FDA has a website about bio-engineered foods called "Feed Your Mind." Blakeslee said it explains the history of biotechnology, how the science works, and lots more.
