The midterm elections are fast approaching and the campaign trail is heating up.  As candidates fan out across the Inland Northwest seeking your vote, AARP is offering a few tips to make the most of your choices come November.  AARP’s Sean Voskuhl said it is important to remember that rural votes count.

“From voting on officials who represent you in Washington DC, in your state, or even country commissions, or state boards pertaining to agriculture, rural votes can make a difference.  The average age of today’s farmer is no secret, and Americans over 50 are the most powerful voting block in the nation, so farmers and ranchers and everyone in rural America should be very confident when heading to the polls.”

Being confident, Voskuhl said means understanding the issues and where a candidate’s beliefs are.  He added given the state of information gathering today, that can be challenge.

“There is just so much information out there these days, some true, some not, and some simply just rumors, so cutting through the clutter is essential when comparing candidates.  Become part of the process, attend campaign stops, ask the tough questions, and make sure the information you are receiving on-line or through other means is credible.”

Bottom line, Voskuhl said, it’s important to be well informed this election season.
