World Pear Day Celebrates Delicious Fruit
Saturday, December 2nd is the 2nd annual World Pear Day, which celebrates the delicious tree fruit that grows so well in the Northwest.
Kevin Moffitt, President and CEO of Pear Bureau Northwest, said this year they want to break a world record for the number of samples consumed in one day.
“World Pear Day is a way to get attention around the world to pears themselves and get some activities, some social media discussion going on about pears just to really kick off the month that pear sales and pear availability is at its peak.”
December is National Pear Month.
There will be 24 hours worth of celebrations that begin in New Zealand and will feature nearly 200 sampling locations in the U.S. alone.
“When they start kicking things off in New Zeland, which by the way will begin with a person bungee jumping with pears, wearing a U.S.A. Pears t-shirt just to get things started. That will probably be Anjou pears.”
Moffitt said this year crop is a little bit smaller in terms of yield than last year, but quite big in fruit size.
