Wheat growers have been reducing acreage for a while now, and a USDA forecast shows that trend will likely continue.

Analyst David Stallings said plantings could drop below 50 million acres and stay there.

“We don’t see much opportunity for growing demand in the United States unless our population doubles which we think is extremely unlikely to happen.”

And with a lack of demand growth in the U.S., those looking abroad will likely see production on the rise in other places according to Stallings.

“We’re facing a lot of competition in wheat trade with the E.U., with Russia, with Ukraine and with Canada.”

Exports could help grow some demand, but Stallings says it likely won’t be enough to prevent the continued decline of wheat production in the U.S.
