It may be August and the holidays seem like a long way away, but for farm direct business operators should be getting their marketing plans together now whether it’s on social media or online, or through a more traditional medium.

University of Maryland Extension’s Ginger Myers said it’s important to be prepared.

“We’ve got to look at raising customer awareness that we’re even there to cut through all the chatter that’s there on the Internet and other advertising sources.”

The constant availability of online shopping and blending of timelines about various holidays starting with Labor Day, it requires a marketing plan, particularly for social media.

Myers said there are many great ideas.

“Perhaps you’re going to offer a special that only your social media folks have access to; i.e. buy one, get one. Or run a contest. This is a great time of the year if you’re doing some kind of fall decoration or if you have a new baby animal on the farm; run a naming contest.”

And remember, the holidays will be here before you know it.
