Americans, particularly kids, are eating better and there is progress being made on the number of people who are obese.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack told an obesity roundtable that there is a lot of work being done to make healthy food more available and affordable.

“Some of the obesity rates have plateaued especially among children and for a subset of kids they’ve actually gone down a bit. We’re seeing food insecurity decline a bit in the United States particularly an important decline in children. It’s at a record low this year and we’re proud of that and we want to see that continue.”

Vilsack said the work must continue and that obesity rates won’t turnaround overnight and so Congress needs to continue to invest in healthy food programs.
