USDA's FoodKeeper app educates consumers on food-prep and storage all in an effort to improve food safety and avoid food waste.  Chris Bernstein of the Food Safety and Inspection Service said the app has been updated.

"To the database itself that offers information on the foods and beverages...so, we added 85 new items to the database."

To go along with a list of 600 other existing foods and beverages.  And Bernstein said the new items were added through;

"A feature where users can search for food, and if they don't find what they're looking for in the database, they can send an email from within the application...to say hey, you guys should really consider adding sunflower seeds, or something like that."

The USDA FoodKeeper app is available through both Apple and Android stores for download onto respective smart-phones and tablets.  Bernstein notes another update to the app will be how often it's updated, instead of annually.  And the USDA's goal for FY 19 is to update the foods in the database about every three months.
