The U.S. and Mexico have signed to a new agreement regarding the trade of sugar between the two nations that Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue calls a dramatic improvement.

Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said one thing the agreement will do is, “Suspend the anti-dumping and countervailing duties against Mexican sugar imports into the U.S.”

In turn, it will help prevent dumping in Mexico through increased prices in both raw and refined sugar.

Perdue said this will help protect the U.S. sugar industry, as will the flexibility that USDA will have to define raw and refined sugars, and is a demonstration of good faith as NAFTA negotiations approach.
