The Obama Administration has designated the tribal lands of the Spokane Indians as a Promise Zone in the third and final round of designations.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro said, “Promise Zones are high need communities where the federal government empowers local leaders to transform and to revitalize entire neighborhoods.”

The designation will focus on improving education, support economic development and promoting public health.

Castro said the newly designated zones will get a lot of help from the federal government to improve their communities.

“Including priority access to federal funding, a federal liaison to help them navigate existing resources, and five Americorps members on the ground to support their individual needs.”

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack says the designation of Spokane showcases Obama’s focus on helping in rural areas.
