A group of organizations hope to grow excitement in Oregon for school gardens.  Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom wants kids learning where their food comes from.

“School gardens just really represent this crucial entry point for getting young people excited about growing food," said Anita Spaeth, OAIC's Washington County programs coordinator.  She added school gardens level the playing field, athletes, Mathletes and class clowns are in the same space, and it doesn’t matter if you’re in a rural or urban community.

“It’s so crucial to bridge that gap and the garden is such a great place for demonstrating to students you can grow your food anywhere, really, and at any scale.”

Spaeth partnered with several other groups to host an event Saturday, to teach teachers about garden-based learning, regardless of their level of experience when it come to gardening.  This weekend’s event will take place in Hillsboro, but she hopes it’ll be a model for other partnerships around Oregon.
