The USDA has signed a memorandum of understanding with a group called SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, to help beginning farmers and ranchers.

Secretary Sonny Perdue said those getting into farming face many challenges.

“They need land. They need equipment. They need access to capital and they need someone to turn to with their questions.”

Perdue said that’s where SCORE can help by offering business advice on some best practices from a business perspective.

“SCORE has a 50-year track record of helping small businesses thrive, expand and grow. Now it’s expanding its nationwide network of 11,000 mentors further into agriculture where you know, better than I do, agriculture is a business.”

SCORE will offer opportunities for both farmers getting out of farming who want to give back to the industry, or those who are new to the industry.
