President Trump showcased products made in America recently highlighting what Americans can do.

The USDA has now released a report that recapped the successful year of American research with Dr. Ann Bartuska, Acting Chief Scientist at USDA noting they try to balance between quick return and long-term payoff.

“I would like to think that we always have room for the high-risk, low-payoff science because you just don’t know if all of a sudden that high-risk, high-payoff occurs. That’s part of the diversity of the science that we do.”

Some of the research has been moved to the private sector to be sold in the marketplace.

Bartuska said one of the more exciting research projects is a handheld device

“That can be used to determine if a food product is contaminated.”

One USDA study showed that for every dollar spent on research returns $20 to the economy.
