Beginning producers fact many challenges just trying to get into the business, and private-public partnerships with lending institutions and the Farm Service Agency can help.

Carl Horn with Farm Credit Services said they can often help with capital expansion through the FSA.

“Participation loans and guaranteed loans; that’s a strong partnership that helps get the first piece of ground. Maybe that’s their transition plan into the family operation is buying ground.”

It doesn’t stop with just the purchasing though. Horn said they work with new producers in other ways.

“We really work with trying to help the customer develop those basic financial and business management skills that they should learn very early on that includes planning, etc. and that will help them too think about the alternatives that exist.”
