Ag secretary Sonny Perdue continues to focus on an issue that's been a priority during his short tenure, internet connectivity.

“One of our goals at USDA is to connect America through rural broadband allover, and that falls without our purview, to a large degree working with private sector, as well as electric and telephone coops all across the country.”

Perdue made those comments during a recent stop in Alabama where a local electric coop received $2.9 million USDA broadband grant to serve additional houses.

“When kids have to drive into town to sit in a parking lot to do their homework today on electronics that’s an inconvenience, but more than an inconvenience, it decreases the economic viability of those communities.”

Perdue stressed broadband is not only vital for trade and marketplace activity, but it’s also vital for precision agriculture.
