USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue was in Chicago this week for the United Fresh Produce Show.  While there, he addressed the progress of the Farm Bill.  He sounded optimistic when mentioning the Senate's Cloture vote.

"Hopefully that means we can get to a Farm Bill prior to expiration in September."

Supporters hope to pass the Senate Farm Bill measure before the July 4th recess.  With the House already passing its version last week, the next step, if the Senate passes its proposed legislation, would be a conference to iron out the differences.  With hopes the Congress can pass the 2018 Farm Bill before the current farm bill expires September 30th.  Purdue also noted continued Congressional support of a Farm Bill program connected to the produce industry, a grant program to encourage SNAP participants to consume for fruits and vegetables.

"I'm happy to see that both the Senate and the House have included that provision back into the Farm Bills this year."
