Oregon GOP Wants Wildfire Hazard Map Pulled
Republicans in Oregon’s Legislature are calling for the Wildfire Hazard Map, which shows properties in the state at high risk of wildfire, to be repealed. House Minority Leader Christine Drazan said rural residents feel targeted.
"Oregonians are increasingly frustrated by the direction the state is moving in, and this map is another example of agency overreach that threatens their day to day lives."
The original version of the map was withdrawn last year; it was redesigned, taking into account irrigated farmland and wetlands. But Senator Noah Robinson said the new map still has problems.
"The maps are riddled with errors, these kinds of computer models. I looked at them carefully, what they've done with the science, and it's very difficult to properly model these things, constantly changing positions, and it’s just riddled with errors. You can't get it right."
They want the map withdrawn, allowing property owners to voluntarily make improvements. Governor Kotek has paused the appeals process which gives the Legislature time to decide how to proceed.
