The Oregon Dairy and Nutrition Council have brought a professional chef to Northeast Oregon to help school cooks learn healthy, tasty meals for kids.

In a YouTube video describing the program, Director of Nutrition Affairs Anne Goetze called these programs critical.

“School meals provide important nutrition for kids and we know that well-nourished kids perform better at school.”

Goetze said their program focuses on meals with fat free milk, cheese and yogurt along with dark green and orange vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

Heidi DuPuis with the Oregon Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs said, “What we’re seeing today is the school lunch of the future. People are cooking from scratch, learning how to time its preparation so it’s fresh and tasty and kids enjoy eating it.”

Goetze said they’ve trained more than 200 school cooks from around the state how to cook better meals.
