The Oregon Department of Agriculture Director Alexis Taylor is wrapping up her first year on the job and said she’s very excited for what the state’s ag industry can do in 2018.

One of the reasons for optimism is the proximity of Oregon’s growers to expanding export markets.

“By 2030, 66 percent of the world’s middle class is going to live in Asia. What’s one of the first thing anyone does when they start making a little bit more money? They buy safe, high quality food products– meat, protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products– all things Oregon happens to grow and excel at. So I think there’s a lot of opportunity.”

Taylor also believes her experience at the national level for agriculture will help the state navigate what could be a tough 2018.

Taylor praised farmers in the Beaver State noting that they ultimately can make or break the industry.

“Our food sector is really creative. Like I’ve said, if someone is willing to pay a farmer or rancher to try something, they are willing to try it. That’s pretty exciting. Oregon is definitely known for that innovation across the country but also across the world.”

One thing Taylor says she is paying close attention to is the NAFTA renegotiations which could have a major impact on Oregon’s farmers.
