President Obama is telling Asian partners that despite the political noise in Washington DC, deals like TPP “eventually get done.”  This week, the President said, “Back home, we’ll have to cut through the noise once the election season is over,” citing the need to open markets generally closed to U.S. goods.  But President Obama keeps running into bipartisan TPP resistance, not just from the two major party presidential candidates, but from both party leaders in Congress.  Former USDA Secretary and ag trade proponent John Block said he does not expect Obama to give up so quickly.

“Anything could change, I don’t think the President will give up until he finds out it’s not going to happen.”

Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan said TPP has issues that need to be addressed and fixed and that will take time.  Top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi also opposes the TPP in its present form.
