Kids Grow Program in Kittitas County Farmers Market

Many of the farmers markets through the Inland Northwest have great programs for kids to learn about the different parts of agriculture.

Ellensburg Public Library’s Youth Services Director Susan Hart runs one such program called Kids Grow which takes place the first Saturday of each month at the Kittitas County Farmers Market.

“We want to get kids and the community connected with the growing process and where their food comes from from seed to plate.”

The first event was in May and discussed seeds. Tomorrow [Saturday, June 3^rd] will discuss the parts of the plants, how they grow and have a bee expert talk about pollination.

Hart said this has been a great experience for the kids and beneficial for the market.

“A lot of the market vendors have expressed support and excitement about the program because it connects kids to what they’re bringing to the market as well. The kids are able to identify what they’re selling and also identify where it comes from and how it’s grown.”

The kids that take part in the Kids Grow program will be able to plant food in a community garden and use the harvest in the fall to make pizzas to take home.
