The first legal hemp seeds entered Washington last week, and producers who might be interested in growing the versatile crop can learn more at an education workshop in Moses Lake Tuesday, June 6th.

President of the Washington Hemp Industries Association Joy Beckerman said products from hemp can include human and animal food, textiles, building materials and much more.

“We are interested in getting everybody who wants to take advantage of the promise and opportunity that industrial hemp brings to this event; farmers, entrepreneurs, retailers, citizens interested in engaging in this process.”

The workshop will include experts on growing industrial hemp, the legalities surrounding hemp production, research coordinators from WSDA and more.

Beckerman said to get industrial hemp to really be a successful crop, there are other aspects required.

“We need infrastructure in order to process industrial hemp, and I get this misconception with folks who really think there’s an apples to apples or oranges to oranges situation with industrial hemp. For purposes of reality and interest and how all of that works, they might as well be two completely different plants.”

There is a registration fee to attend the workshop, so to find out more, visit LetsFarmHemp.com.
