The House Ag Committee kicked off their 2017 session noting the importance of coming up with the next farm bill, and if they get it done before the current expires, that would be the first time in 16 years.

Committee Chairman Michael Conaway said, “Most of it is non-partisan, it’s just about feeding folks and making sure they have food. There will be some partisan things we’ll have to grapple with.”

For the most recent farm bill, one of the points of contention was to remove food programs like SNAP from the purview of the USDA.

Ranking Democrat Collin Peterson said they are optimistic.

“It’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to make it happen and we are ready to get to work on this effort.”
