Heritage Foundation Report Worries Newhouse

A new Heritage Foundation report has suggested that for the new farm bill, subsidies like crop insurance should be drastically cut or eliminated and let the ag industry more closely resemble other industries.

Representative Dan Newhouse said while he hasn’t read the full 148-page report, what he has seen has concerned him.

“I think having a safety net for our agricultural industry is important. I think we need to make sure that we have a strong ag industry.”

Newhouse said that if the U.S. is forced to rely on foreign countries for food, we are at a much weaker position.

“The strength of our ag industry as well as our communities in ag producing areas is very important and we need to continue providing some kind of safety net and make sure that’s in place.

Newhouse noted that there have been some major changes to the ag industry and that farmers have more skin in the game.
