October is Fire Prevention Month, and to mark the occasion, Oregon’s Department of Forestry is recognizing the efforts to protect Sisters during this summer’s Flat Fire.  ODF’s Kyle Williams said community fire risk reduction played a significant role in saving the city.

“The work that the community has done, you look at some of those subdivisions, the work that they've done around their homes...0 to 5 feet, most of those homes have rock from their front porch out."

Williams added the ability to increase wildfire protection takes several steps.

"An effective response with firefighters and equipment to do it," he said.  "You think about how we treat our landscapes and how we increase that, and you think about what communities are doing proactively to protect their homes and help protect firefighters when they're in there protecting your homes."

Williams said this was a joint effort between the state and the local community to proactively work to reduce the fire risk.
