Finding the Future of Agriculture

The farming and ranching population continues to be older and fewer young people are looking at agriculture as a future career.

Economic Research Service Administrator Mary Bohman spoke on a panel of USDA officials on ag’s future.

“I think we have a unique opportunity now with society, especially the younger generation’s, interest in food and agriculture.”

Funding to continue to create and attract young people into agriculture is critical.

Bohman said the marketplace will also help.

“Ultimately it’s the jobs and funding available that lure people into a profession both in the public and in the private sector.”

Funding for ag research is one area in helping create jobs that might be attractive to young people.
