The value of a farm, cropland and cash rents are all down in 2016 according to the USDA’s Chief Economist Rob Johannson.

According to Johannson, cropland decreased by $40 per acre and cash rents are down four percent nationally.

“So I think that would suggest to me that producers are having a harder time renting land and making their balance sheets work with high cash rents and they’ve been somewhat successful negotiating those downwards.”

A trend that Johannson expects to continue going forward.
