The average American ate nearly 380 eggs in the early 1950s, but that number plummeted over the next few decades, bottoming out in 1995 at less than 230.

Anne Alonzo with the American Egg Board says that number has recovered somewhat with the average being about 265 eggs per year thanks in some part to restaurants and fast-food chains offering breakfast all day.

“One of the game changers there was McDonalds and many other large retailers have followed suit so people, millennials, others that have different lifestyles; they can eat eggs all day.”

Another factor could be research that is showing eggs are not a major contributor to cholesterol problems as had been believed in the past.
