WSU Entomologist Doug Walsh was one of six Yakima Valley area residents honored with the International Order of the Hop award at the International Hop Growers Convention in Yakima last week.

Walsh said he was honored to be recognized though that isn’t why he does what he does.

“As a scientist, I just enjoy science and the hop grower have been ideal to work with and they’re all very cooperative, they’re very helpful. You realize that that preponderance of the hops that are produce in the United State are right here in the Yakima Valley.”

The award is given to those who have made significant contributions to the hop industry and often go above and beyond to help farmers or processors.

Walsh has helped growers understand pesticide use and how to make sure their crop is exportable, but he’s also worked heavily in trying to help growers deal with spidermites.

“I’ve been working quite a bit in trying to develop molecular markers that are associated with miticide resistance, so to me it’s been interesting research and I think it’s been well-received by the industry.”

Walsh did say he’s going to have some fun with the award and make sure his friends call him “Sir Doug Walsh” if possible.
